exactly one person asked for a men's list when it came to my cooking headcanons list for the ladies so here ya go!
Chris Redfield- Actually a decent home cook because he was old enough to want to give Claire some of their mom's cooking when he could. Unfortunately, any time he tries a new recipe for the first time he burns it. The second or third time things come out fine, but the first time he does something new he's opening windows to let out the pan smoke or returning to coals in the oven.
Barry Burton- His wife does all the cooking as he's hopeless in the kitchen, but since they got married she's never had to wash a single dish. He always made sure there's a working dishwasher in their house for when he's away too long to do his usual chore.
Albert Wesker- Can make the fanciest looking food in the world. We're talking Michelin star $100 a plate in appearance only. His dishes have zero flavor. They taste. No one understands how this happens.
Leon Kennedy- Breakfast King. I know the line in damnation is too overused, but breakfast is actually the easiest way to start learning how to cook. Box mix pancakes, bacon, sausage, and eggs, all require him to put something in a pan on low to medium heat with some oil and poke it around until it's done. There's little effort exerted in monitoring since that's half his real job anyway. Of course it translates to cooking. He's perfected the timing. Everything else is take-out though.
Carlos Oliveira- He had no idea how to cook until he got out of Raccoon City and went home to his family. He tried learning from his mama, but she'd always take the knife or pan from him, so he learned from a sibling and is pretty good at it. He makes a lot of marinades, so the blender is his friend.
Luis Serra Navarro- Absolutely under no circumstances does this man belong in a kitchen. He will concoct the most wretched smelling health food that's full of vitamins, minerals, and "a healthy dash of vinegar for flavor". He's wonderful to have at the dinner table, but never at the stove. Makes a real tasty cup of coffee though.
Jack Krauser- For some ungodly reason, this man can take someone's most hated foods and make them taste good. No idea what the hell he does to it as he will kick everyone out of the kitchen until he's done, but he's just like that. Barely cooks not because he hates it, but because he has to be in the mood.
Piers Nivans- He's the king of the grill. Will lecture anyone in earshot about the important difference between gas, charcoal, or wood when it comes to maintaining the flavor of the meat. He also believes salt and pepper are all you need for a great burger which must be cooked to medium at the hottest lest it lose it's tenderness.
Jake Muller- Salads, smoothies, and overnight oats, he's the one making meals that are able to be eaten fast or on the go. Fruit counts as a dessert to him. He does enjoy experimenting by eating the "weird" or most unfriendly tourist foods while he travels so he has something to brag about, even though he could never figure out how to cook any of it himself.
Ethan Winters- He tries his best. He'll help Mia in the kitchen with food prep or clean up. He makes good dips for chips, has a delicious cookie recipe, and researched how to make baby food for when Rosemary stopped being breastfed. This somehow translated into him figuring out how to make very good custards and parfaits. Although, he got super frustrated trying to figure out how to make bread and has given up the fight.
i will happily do this again for any characters not on either of my lists since i love cooking and baking, and this is fun to think about

How Good the RvB Main Cast is at Cooking, Ranked from Best to Worst
1. Donut
Donut gives off the vibe of one of those gay men with a baking channel on YouTube. This man's out here rolling up to the red team monthly dinner club with frenched rack of lamb with a pistachio mint crust and wine accompaniment, then earl grey souffle with creme anglaise for dessert. He spends hours experimenting with new and interesting ingredients. Remy Ratatouille, send-you-back-to-rural-France ass man. Donut's food fucks hard and everyone knows it.
2. Grif
You really think my man Grif loves food as much as he does and doesn't know how to make it? C'mon. He doesn't, like, relish the act of cooking as much as he does having a good plate of food at the end of it. And he's not typically much for sharing. But my guy makes a damn good short rib and bechamel lasagna. Give him the day to let something slow cook, and god damn.
3. Wash
Wash has been living off of MREs for probably his entire adult life, but I feel like he's got a few dishes he can whip out for a date night, or if he's feeling fancy. He knows how to read a recipe, and he has a pretty good idea of what flavors go together to make something good. He probably has a really nice papardelle with vinho verde sauce that he has sitting around in the back of his head for special occasions.
4. Tucker
Okay, Tucker isn't a bad cook by any means, ok? He's great with breakfast food specifically. It's just that he isn't especially fancy about it. He was probably, like, a line cook at Denny's in high school, so all his food tastes like food you would get at Denny's. Which isn't a bad thing! You would just never call Denny's "fine dining". He has his niche, and he does it well, and he never feels even a little bit inclined to do anything different or better.
5. Church (Alpha)
Church isn't much of a foodie right off the bat, but someone's got to pack Caboose's lunch, and he ends up learning how to cook fairly well after that. After a certain point, he figures out how to make things from scratch--mostly things like chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, pancakes.
6. Simmons
I feel like Simmons mostly lives off of shit like green smoothies and homemade granola. Like, hardcore, low carb, vegan, all organic, high protein diet. And, like, it doesn't taste BAD. But it definitely isn't the kind of thing you bring to the red team dinner club. He does make a really nice sunbutter brownie that he has to hide from Grif.
7. Caboose
Caboose has been banned from using any objects in the kitchen that involve a heat source--which isn't HIS fault! How was he supposed to know that you're supposed to take the spoon OUT of the mac and cheese before putting it in the microwave? That's just a recipe for a cold spoon! Anyways, he manages just fine without the microwave, thank you very much. He can make ants on a log like it's nobody's business. Cleaning up afterwards is another matter entirely.
8. Carolina
Carolina is one of the most competent individuals you will ever meet. She could kill you in under a minute, in 30 different ways, and that's just with her bare hands. The fourth time Sarge tries to recruit her into red team is by inviting her to the monthly dinner club. She shows up empty handed, and when Donut very politely asks what she brought, she replies that it's very interesting that they expected the only woman on the team to go all out with cooking. They move on. Carolina spent 5 hours in the kitchen this afternoon trying to figure out how to use the oven. But they don't need to know that.
9. Tex
Now, listen. Tex can't be called a bad cook, precisely, because that would require she cook for herself or others. Which is something she does not do. That's what Church is for, isn't it?
10. Sarge
Sarge refuses to step foot in a kitchen after the fifth shouting match about how flamethrowers are not a universally recognized kitchen appliance.
11. Church (Epsilon)
One time, while blue team is shooting the wind, Caboose asks Epsilon what his favorite breakfast food is. Instead of calling Caboose a dumbass, as per usual, he instead goes into extensive detail about how he eats computer keys like cereal. Caboose tries it. It isn't very good.

i think there’s something so soft about analogince. (someone make me the ceo of this ship i adore it/hj)
here are some headcanons:
the anxiety and insecurity that roman feels can be shared with virgil. and logan is great at comforting the two because he’s so objective. they will all curl up together under a bunch of blankets and watch disney movies. logan and virgil will remind roman that he is so good at his job and he is so important.
roman and virgil are also good at coddling logan a little bit. he can get so caught up in work and the two are so good at dragging him away with a promise of crofters or cuddles or a Christopher Nolan film. (headcanoning that logan loves christopher nolan movies specifically interstellar and oppenheimer.)
virgil has days where he struggles to get out of bed. roman will manage to get him in the shower. he will sit on the toilet seat and talk to him, sometimes he will wash virgil hair. logan makes them all breakfast and he makes a smoothie for virgil for later so he doesn’t have to worry about the choices that come with deciding what to eat.
virgil really likes the saw movies. but they scare roman. so logan and virgil will only watch them when roman isn’t around, but that isn’t always possible so when that happens virgil will lend roman his big noise canceling headphones and roman will watch something else on his ipad.
okay, okay. i know these have all been on the like hurt/comfort side of things. so now here are my like basic headcanons.
virgil is usually in the middle of their cuddle piles. roman is sometimes in the middle. logan is almost never in the middle it makes him claustrophobic.
roman’s love language is words of affirmation. logan’s is quality time. virgil’s is physical touch.
virgil is known to steal roman’s and logan’s sweaters when the other two are working. it drives logan slightly nuts until he finds virgil asleep in one of his sweatshirts and he lays off.
logan and virgil are insomniacs but roman needs sleep.
virgil’s favorite drink is like black coffee or doctor pepper. logan usually drinks water with lemon. roman likes sprite.
roman cannot drink energy drinks. he tried one time and logan and virgil thought he was going to die.
virgil does roman’s eyeliner a lot. logan gets flustered when he sees his boyfriends in makeup.
virgil has safe foods that resemble the flavor pallet of a five year old and roman and logan don’t say anything about it because they don’t want to hurt his feelings. they eat dino nuggets often.
roman hates olives. the other two love them. (yes i know this isn’t how the olive theory works but it’s still cute)
roman’s favorite video game is animal crossing. virgil’s is stardew valley. logan’s is baldurs gate 3.
virgil is like a cat. he can sleep wherever and just wants to be around the other two so you can often find them in the same room doing three different tasks but they are all content.
okay that’s all for now. thanks for listening!!

This is a reminder to those who struggle with the idea of putting together meals (be it low energy, depression, feeling overwhelmed etc), you don't have to make a regular meal in order to eat! There are lots of pre-made/easy to make options out there that are healthy, filling, and taste good!
Bolthouse Farms pre-bottled smoothies (or any brand pre-bottled smoothie) are a great go-to to for breakfast (the strawberry parfait smoothie is a big favorite of mine)
For a snack, I love grabbing some carrot sticks and the individual ranch dip cups you can buy and the supermarket.
I'm also obsessed over the microwavable mini-potatoes that come with seasoning packets (found in the produce section). Pop that sucker in the microwave for 5 minutes and bamb you got yourself 3-4 meals of potatoes right there.
Yogurt is a great fast and easy option as well (Chobani has the really yummy flip cups that come with toppings such as cookies and cream, salted caramel, and key lime pie).
If you want more snacky food, Quaker Oats has a really yummy Salted Caramel rice cake chips (I used to think rice cakes were gross, but these are fucking fire I almost ate a full bag this morning).
Another great snack is fruit, either dried or fresh! I have a pack of raspberries in the fridge and a bag of apple chips in my snack drawer ready to go.
If you want actual meat, I buy my meat pre-cut (so I don't have to do all the work) and I just mix it up with a seasoning packet (supermarkets have tons of different seasoning packets for meat) and throw it in the air fryer.
Microwavable Minute Rice Cups!! It's a really fast and low-effort way to put together a side of rice for a meal! They come in packs of two individual microwavable cups of rice, all you gotta do is pop it in the microwave for a minute.
Getting tired or sick of drinking water? Grab some Powerade. Yes, it has sugar, but it also has electrolytes your body needs and will still keep you hydrated. I *hate* water, so Powerade/gatorade is an easy way for me to stay hydrated. I always keep a bottle in my backpack and one on my nightstand. You can also try Liquid IV, but I'm not a fan of the salty taste that goes with it. Buuuut there are Sour Patch Kid flavored ones that don't taste too bad 👀 The bottom line is, go for whatever will keep you hydrated.
I've struggled with chronic illness and low energy for years, as well as having essentially no executive function thanks to my ADHD, so cooking or putting together traditional meals has been really difficult. These are just the foods that have been easy for me and I know it won't fit everyone's criteria, but I hope it helps some folks out who are looking for some low effort and easy meals/snacks!
#travis talks#food#low spoons#easy cooking#low spoon cooking#mental health#cooking#low energy#health#chronically ill#these are just some ideas that have worked out well for me and I hope someone finds them useful!

What's everyone in your BATMM AU's favorite food?
Great question! (Finally someone ask me about their favorite stuff) I also included my OCs and put the gang's least favorite food as well.
(note: some are based on what I like and dislike)
Flarelyn Family AU:
★ Blaze just loves chocolate truffles but only gets to eat it once because it's such an special treat for him to eat as she may not self control themselves and hates spicy food (man can eat it whatever he wants but he's not a fan of it for some reason.)
★ Crusher really fw seafood especially that has soup on it (specifically sushi). Also Crusher also fw with spicy noodles.
Crusher doesn't like other spicy food in general and pickles.
★ Fiar loves the Mac-And-Cheese and Strawberry Lemonade combo. She made this combo by herself when she was making herself strawberry lemonade while Crusher was making Mac And Cheese for her.
Fiar hates spicy food, banana and avocado. She will only eat the banana if it is a banana split or covered in chocolate and sprinkles.
(don't ask me why the FF hates spicy food, they're an sweet tooth family)
★ Pickle is very much obviously enough, usually doesn't have a least favorite other than non-edible food.
★ Watts fw Ube Grilled Cheese! (Watts just loves ube flavored food) and she also likes Siopao (especially the toasted one! That sh🫧t is really good. /Gen)
Watts doesn't like spaghetti that much anymore (specifically the Filipino one) because of how many times she ate at events her parents go to. (Me moment)
★ Starla likes spaghetti and meatballs but she doesn't like bacon and other beefy stuff.
★ Darington likes waffles for breakfast with blueberries and whip cream on top of it. They for some reason don't like pancakes. They also love star shaped chicken nuggets.
★ Stripes likes spicy chicken with sliced tomatoes and potatoes on it. (Btw it's cooked! He doesn't like the taste of raw chicken) Also Stripes doesn't like sweet food especially cake.
★ Zeg has an very old memory when his mother used to baked him Apple raspberry pie every Christmas. Good memories, he still makes his own Apple raspberry pie every Christmas and shared it to his friends. (Btw Zeg can't cook but he can bake for some reason.)
Zeg doesn't like bananas because it tastes kinda plain to him.
★ Onyx both liked Jello Cake and Crabs but Crabs would be their no. 1 favorite food. They like the classic version of Jello Cake the most, classic version is would describe as "salty yet sweet".
Onyx hates Shrimp because she's allergic to it (me moment.)
★ Mia also likes Jello Cake but specifically vanilla flavor, very creamy and sweet. Seaweed spaghetti would be her no. 1 favorite food. Mia doesn't have any least favorite food as for now.
★ Kizzie and Veronica likes strawberry smoothie!
Veronica doesn't like vanilla ice cream. While Kizzie doesn't like chocolate ice cream.
★ Fuchsia likes mint chocolate chip ice cream and hates pumpkin pie.
★ Scarlett doesn't have any favorite or least favorite for now.
Blaze And The Rusty Machines AU:
★ Blaze likes to eat flowers (yes this man is so f🌊ck🫧d up) after he's at stage 3 with his sanity getting worse. He only likes it when it was bought from the flower shop instead of the garden because of the dirt.
★ Crusher in the other hand hates eating flowers. He likes chocolate cherry ice cream.

Hello, a soon-to-be veganuary participant here! Do you have any tips on how to communicate your veganism when you have e.g. family gatherings, sometimes with… a bit more conservative members, where there is a meal offered? I don’t want to seem too difficult😬 Also Food and easy everyday vegan food ideas would be appreciated!
Absolutely, it’ll be my pleasure! And Thank You!!!<3
So, I'll start with the last part of this ask. I think it's easier not to think of it as "vegan meals", and instead veganize whatever one usually eats. For me, I loved to have scrambled eggs in the mornings, now I have scrambled tofu (extra firm, not silken), that way I can still enjoy my comfort food but have it be animal-free.
meal suggestions:
Breakfast foods are perhaps the simplest to turn plant-based, takes mostly switching a few ingredients. Other meals are not difficult, but traditionally they might rely more on animal products, so you might have to tweak them more. These two (lunch and dinner) I'll be pairing because I eat them interchangeably at either noon or evening. If you want specific recipes, Pinterest is your best friend (my ask box will still be open though).
-Breakfast: oatmeal, toasts/bagels with either sweet or salty toppings, cereals, smoothie bowls, PB&J like Cas (still an SPN blog, sorry), hashed browns or smoothies, if you're like me and have no time in the mornings.
-Lunch/Dinner: rice&beans with a little extra something of your choosing (I like avocado or a simple green salad on the side), wraps/burritos (throw anything veggie in there, really), pasta (just had it with sautéed green beans and cashews), hearty salads (bulk up with, yes, beans - garbanzo/chickpeas are great for this!), thick soups (roast some veggies, then put in a blender and voilà. Great for low energy days and easier digestion), chili sin carne and curries.
-Snacks: i'm partial to nuts and seeds, but fruits are great too, as well as veggies/whatever with hummus, chips and the like (original Pringles, Lay's and Fritos, some pretzels and Takis too!), cookies (many options, original Oreos reign supreme), chocolate (most dark choc is vegan, sweeter options made with plant milks are also available), most popcorn, vegan ice cream (if you have access to Oatly and like chocolate, try the Fudge Brownie, so good) or vegan protein bars if you're in need of a protein-dense pick-me up (protein bars across the board aren’t the best in taste though, so, yeah).
general tips:
start increasing your fiber intake gradually, Now - this is because plant-based diets tend to be higher in fiber, and a sudden boost in it when you're not used to might lead to temporary bloating/discomfort because your digestive system is going to be doing some adjustments.
keep protein and fats in mind - DO EAT THEM! if you're filling unfulfilled after a meal, it might be because it was lacking in those. a lettuce, cucumber and tomato salad is not high in calories or satisfactory in general, it'll be disheartening and it may have you quitting or cursing vegans. if consuming salads make them hearty!
on the same line of protein - as a whole and from what i see in my own country, these days we're a bit obsessed with protein. and even if it's necessary we tend to overestimate our needs and underestimate our intake. if it's more convenient for you, there are many mock meats (depending on where you live, of course) that offer chicken/beef/fish-like products with high protein, but they can be pricier, aren't a necessity and are not really reflective of what most vegans eat for every meal every day. tofu, tempeh, beans and tvp (textured vegetable protein. super cheap and versatile) are my go-to.
tofu - holy grail, unless you're allergic to soy. if not, it's a great base for literally anything. they key is squeezing out the water and seasoning well.
b12 supplementation/fortified foods
condiments are your best friend - this goes for any and all sorts of cooking, it's amazing what spices can do to enhance flavors.
most ingredients list on food labels will list allergens at the very end or have it in bold letters. here you'll see things that you wish to avoid, like eggs and milk, if the product contains any.
same if you have any safe foods for whatever reason, don't remove it from your diet, simply try to find a vegan alternative or tweak it a bit.
if for some reason you eat something non plant-based, don't make a big deal out of it or quit veganuary. just choose a vegan option the next time.
consider other aspects in your life that rely on animal products and, if safely possible, evaluate alternatives
it's not an all or nothing mentality, remember it's as far as is possible and practicable
As for your first question and based on my personal experience, people who judge or mock others' dietary choices mostly to do so with vegans and vegetarians only, so that's something to unpack there. In your case since it's specifically Veganuary, I'd simply say it's a challenge/activity you want to participate in to help with the environment and animals. Don't knock it til you try it sorta thing.
There are going to be questions and comments, there always are. If very conservative food-wise, relatives or friends may throw negative comments your way, but know those are a reflection of them and whatever they're dealing with rather than what you're doing or with you as an individual. It's literally their problem, not yours, cliché but true. Don't take as personal what other people might say about it because many do get defensive and touchy, even if you aren't out to "get them." In gatherings, if they offer you food, try to veganize the meal, if possible. If meat is optional, just substract it. It might not be the best or most balanced of meals, but you can make up for it later and it shows you've got nothing against their cooking because I bet you don’t. Also, if you know there won't be anything vegan, try bringing in a plate/side dish yourself to share with others, that way you won't arrive empty-handed and you'll make sure to stick to your goal.
// We are latine and my family goes heavy on the animal products consumption, there's not a single meal without them, not one. At the start you yourself might believe your eating is “difficult” but trust me, it isn’t. Past that initial hurdle, people tend to go ‘oh, this is vegan too!!’ (excitedly. very cute!, especially when they wanna share it with you. i just love it). They're used to me being vegan now though, even my grandmas and aunts are now way more receptive of alternative eating styles other than those they raised us in and are mindful of having something for me available (which is usually eaten by everybody else, anyway). The whole thing is gradual and slow, but being vegan is the best decision I've made for many reasons besides the dietary aspect of it, plus it cranked up my creativity in the kitchen, oof!
#sorry this got so long#if you have any question about this mammoth of an answer hit me up again (:#so glad you're participating !!#veganuary#answered#vegan#plantibesties if anyone wants to weigh in feel free to add your contribution#the veganuary site also has a nice amount of resources and tips i believe#helganacht

I Discovered A Strange Fruit: "Red Banana" And Interesting Dishes From It!
Discovering the Red Banana
While exploring a local market in a rural village, I stumbled upon a peculiar fruit that instantly caught my eye. Unlike the familiar yellow bananas, these were a striking reddish-purple color, almost resembling a vibrant sunset. Intrigued by this exotic sight, I decided to buy a few and learn more about this unusual fruit.
The vendor, noticing my curiosity, explained that these were Red Bananas, known for their distinct taste and rich nutritional profile. Originating from Southeast Asia and cultivated in regions like India and Central America, Red Bananas are not just a visual treat but also a culinary delight.
Nutritional Benefits of Red Bananas
Before diving into the culinary possibilities, it's essential to appreciate the health benefits that Red Bananas offer:
Rich in Nutrients: Packed with vitamins C and B6, Red Bananas support immune function and brain health.
High in Antioxidants: Their reddish color indicates a high level of beta carotene, which helps fight oxidative stress.
Good for Digestion: Like their yellow counterparts, Red Bananas are a great source of dietary fiber, aiding digestion.
Boosts Energy: With a natural sweetness and carbohydrate content, they provide a quick energy boost, making them perfect for a pre-workout snack.
Culinary Adventures with Red Bananas
Red Bananas have a unique taste, slightly sweeter and creamier than regular bananas, with a hint of raspberry flavor. Here are some exciting dishes I tried and loved:
1. Red Banana Smoothie
A refreshing and nutritious smoothie is an excellent way to start your day.
Ingredients:
2 Red Bananas
1 cup of Greek yogurt
1/2 cup of almond milk
A handful of spinach
1 tablespoon of honey
A few ice cubes
Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender.
Blend until smooth and creamy.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!
2. Red Banana Pancakes
These fluffy pancakes are a delightful breakfast treat, perfect for weekends.

2 Red Bananas, mashed
1 cup of flour
1 cup of milk
1 egg
1 tablespoon of sugar
1 teaspoon of baking powder
A pinch of salt
Butter or oil for cooking
Instructions:
In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk the egg and milk together.
Add the mashed Red Bananas to the wet mixture.
Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just blended.
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a bit of butter or oil.
Pour small amounts of batter onto the skillet, cooking until bubbles form on the surface.
Flip and cook until golden brown on both sides.
Serve with maple syrup or your favorite toppings.
3. Red Banana Bread
A twist on the classic banana bread, this version is moist, flavorful, and perfect with a cup of tea.
Ingredients:
3 Red Bananas, mashed
1/2 cup of melted butter
1 cup of sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
A pinch of salt
Optional: nuts, chocolate chips, or dried fruits
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan.
In a large bowl, mix the melted butter and sugar.
Add the eggs and vanilla extract, stirring well.
Mix in the mashed Red Bananas.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
Fold in any optional add-ins like nuts or chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Memorial Day Weekend
Because I'd been working between 60-80 hour weeks for the last three weeks, there was nothing I wanted more for my Memorial Day weekend than getting out of town and relaxing. We had a tough time deciding what to do and not wanting to spend a ton of money, but Lisa was in the middle of renovating her guest house in Vegas, so that wasn't going to work. We ended up deciding to book a room at the Sand Hollow Resort in Hurricane (UGH I miss mom's Hurricane house so bad, and have huge regrets that we didn't just move down there and take on their house payment) since the weather looked great and we'd have access to a pool.
Work stuff really delayed us getting out the door on Friday morning, so we didn't end up getting down there until almost 6 PM, plus we stopped for cotton candy ice cream from Sub Zero on the way (I miss having Sub Zero down the street also, double ugh). SO good haha.
The room we had rented was actually so nice. It was a suite, with a huge bedroom, a huge living room with a kitchen, and a hallway/bathroom. It was clean, had great views, and was super comfortable. I was so ready to check out and unwind.
We went to the mall to do a little bit of shopping, and we both found some great stuff at H&M. We also did a little restock at Bath and Body Works. Then we picked up pizzas at Pizza Limone, and wow, I loved it. I had a cacio e pepe pizza, and it was such a flavor throwback to Italy, especially because it was topped with fresh lemon juice. B got an all meat pizza, but it came with a spicy honey that took the experience up a notch.
We took it back to the room to eat while we watched TV, and then we played some games on the Switch. My mom is so great to watch Reefy while we went, and he got to go on the cutest walk ever with Archie and Zion. I love seeing all three of them together.
The next day, we picked up breakfast from Tropical Smoothie Cafe (per Hurricane tradition) and made ourselves comfortable at the pool. There is nothing more relaxing than just laying and rotting in the sun, and that's really all I needed. We read, swam, and sunbathed the day away, and I was just so happy.
We took a hiatus in the afternoon to go visit a property that my parents were interested in at Desert Color, and that was quite an experience. It's so perfect that it feels almost fake? I don't know how else to describe it. But any properties within Desert Color get access to the man-made 2-acre lagoon, and it was so fun to go see it. It's gorgeous. Plus, it's basically a resort, so we were able to buy Dippin Dots, which are another favorite of mine.
From there, we went to Rigotti's for more pizza! It was quite the wait, but this pizza was also awesome. I had an alfredo pizza, with again, another lemon hahah.
Then it was back home for more Switch games, and boy were we BURNT. Roasted, toasted. But again, that's basically all I wanted haha.
Sunday was the last day we were down there, because B had a golf game back home Monday morning that we needed to get back to. We packed up the room, and headed over to River Rock Roasting Company, another all-time Hurricane favorite, for breakfast. I had the burrito and a frozen mocha, and life felt complete again. Who knew when mom and dad moved to Hurricane of all places, that I would totally fall in love with it?
Then we went back to the pool for the day, but we both had to be way more careful and stay pretty covered up because we were so burnt. But still did some swimming and a lot of reading, and just had a 10/10 day.
We drove back up to Layton that night, and were able to stop for yet another Sub Zero ice cream (never say no when given the chance).
On Monday, I got to take the morning slow while B was golfing, and get the house and myself organized a bit. Then we took Reef to the dog park, did some grocery shopping, and went to my parents' house for a Memorial Day barbecue.
This whole weekend was everything I needed to feel like I could go back to work swinging, and a little refueled, and I'm so grateful for that.

Today's breakfast!
Vegan almond yogurt, carrot, and clemintine drink + pan-fried egg, steamed kale, sliced vegan bratwurst on a bed of rice!
Very rewarding meal, though I would have loved to have the drink and the food together lol. I forgot to prep and make the drink first, so I made and drank it afterward.
Wrt the drink, I cant quite call it a smoothie yet because I dont have ice and its just not the texture I want it at yet. It has very great flavor, especially the citrus zest; 2 clemintines with pulp amplified by twang of ginger root and a brightness of lemon juice (no cider this time! Didnt need it); lots of honey and carrot to add a tinge of particular sweetness.
BUT
I simply dont have the consistency I desire smdh. The lack of ice means theres less volume to the drink and its lack of viscosity makes the chunks of veggies (particularly the carrot) relatively unplesant in texture. I wouldnt mind said chunks and pieces if they were spread evenly in a smoothie. But alas lol.
Will definitely give the kale a break for more of this bright and healthy juice option!
Ingredients for the drink (no particular proportions; experimenting to taste)
2 clemintines with pulp 🍊
A handfull of baby carrots 🥕
A dash of lemon juice 🍋
A few dollops of vegan yogurt (unsweetened) 🍦
Small cut of fresh ginger root 🫚
LOTS of honey! 🍯
Now that I'm thinking about it, this entire drink would have been nice as is if I had some sort of mesh strainer to seperate the large chunks from the juice itself. That way, it could suffice without ice! 🧊 I def need to invest in one if I cant find one thrifted.
Onto the food!
Nothing too much to say here other than it was a great meal!
The egg was certainly more flavorful than last time, thought I admit it was a bit too much season salt lol. I cooked it last since I was right to remember that eggs cook in like 4 mins max lol. However, I accidentally skipped a step in remembering to heat up the pan with its oil before cracking the egg into it. So for several seconds the poor abortion remained clear and uncooked in the pan, sliding but not simmering. I thought i may have fluked the process again but I turned up the heat a bit and the egg bounced back, the whites appearing slowly as it actually simmered and cooked lol
The rice I simply made in my cute lil rice cooker (i should give it a name 🤔).
My mom got it for me when I was in college, considering I went vegan a few yrs prior, hadnt bought an [unlimited] meal plan at the dorm cafeteria, and may have had limited options (thankfully I didnt, eventually bought and u limited meal plan, and never needed to use the cooker living on campus. It became my ol-reliable later before I left though lol). Its a great cooker and can handle I believe up to around 1 or 1 1/2 cups of rice and its respective portions of water, which is plently for just me and usually enough for 2 servings. I use it almost daily when I cook so its def a staple tool in the kitchen I'm grateful to have. Thanks, mom! 💕
The kale I steamed in a pot with a lid and added a but of Lawry's season salt, a cap full of vinegar, and pepper. Simple yet flavorful. I love seeing the change of volume the kale undergoes as its steamed. A large portion of bright green, rubbery kale leaves that overfills the brim of the pan quickly shrivels into a manageable serving of jeep-green, seasoned kale, steamed to perfection (and much more pleasant to chew!). Speaking of kale transformations lol....
.... Ive had this batch of kale for going on 3 weeks now! I made a post about it before on my nature blog @happigreens (I'll transfer here eventually), but to condense it to the gist of this one, the salt bath i gave the kale was extremely helpful in extending the shelf life of the leaves. By now, theyre finally yellowing and some are wilting from dryness, but many still retain a crisp texture as if freshly harvested. I'll always soak kale leaves in saline water to preserve them! The kale in this meal didnt need that crispness necessarily, but the soaking probably retains its nutritional value for a lot longer, so thats definitely always important!
The brat I cooked the same as last time: pan fried! The brats are so good imo that they dont need any seasoning other than compatible cooking oil! Beyond Meat has some absolutely delish products. I just hope one day plant based products like that can be subsidized or something 😅. Also like before, the brat complimented the egg so well. I really didnt want any meat for this meal but craved the umami flavor combos I had with my last meal. Was not disappointed!
Ingredients for this meal included:
1 Beyond Sausage Brat Origianal link (pulled into pieces for a feeling of bigger portions lol)
1 egg (to be fried)
Like a big bowlfull of kale (again, no exact proportion here lol, but ut was a lot!)
Lawry's season salt (to season kale and egg to taste)
Pepper (for the kale and egg again)
A capful of vinegar (for the kale)
Olive and sesame oil (for pan-frying the egg and brat, and steaming the kale)
1 cup of rice (which take ~2 cups of water to cook)
9/10 It all came together for a great meal! :-)
